Former Boiler House and Birthing Centre, Wakefield

Iconic Conversion Of Historic Listed Buildings And New Contemporary Dwelling Within Conservation Area

A several part conversion site for local Developers, to convert a collection of vacant and derelict historic buildings and land, associated with the former Clayton Hospital in a desirable area of Wakefield city centre. The buildings included the former Boiler House that formally heated the hospital complete with a 20m high chimney, the Locally Listed Birthing Centre, and associated vacant land.

Architecture 1B sensitively restored the Birthing Centre to the two large historic dwellings they had once been, working closely with the Local Authorities Conservation Team to ensure that high quality and historically accurate replacement windows, doors, and materials were used throughout.

For the conversion of the Boiler House, it was decided to selectively demolish the dilapidated timber parts of the building while retaining the characterful stone gables and brick chimney, and replace the previous volume with an ultra-modern 4-bedroom metal clad dwelling with a minimal industrial aesthetic and limited visible fenestration.
