About Us

Architecture 1B is a small bespoke architectural practice.

The company was formed at the end of 2012 by Darren Bailey who has over 20 years experience. He has worked at some of the North’s largest architectural practices delivering projects of varying scale and sectors, such as Headingley cricket ground and central square in Newcastle.

In 2003 Darren was a founding member of Leeds based practice architecture 2B alongside Nick Brown which was commended with various awards.

Our clients are diverse and so are our projects. We work with community groups, individuals, property developers and corporate companies on small, medium and large projects throughout the UK, from our office in Wakefield.

We approach our projects in response to the brief. Some are design led, some are financially or time constrained, but we work hard to ensure our client receives the most appropriate outcome.

We have a core team and work successfully in collaboration with our partners which enables us to service larger projects and bring in the relevant expertise.

We are very active in our local community and work hard to create sustainability in everything we do.

“We are always happy to talk, please get in touch if you have any queries”

St Johns North

  • Description: Located within the St John’s Conservation Area, the area has a very desirable character, with its elegant three-storey late Georgian terraces built around an 18th-century classical Church of St John the Baptist. The application buildings contribute greatly to the historical character of the conservation area and as such are Grade II* Listed. The proposal is to make minor internal alterations to rooms to bring the former offices closer to their original purpose as residential properties, creating a number of apartments within the large buildings.

Oulton

  • Description: The site is within the walled kitchen garden of the old Oulton House. In the heart of the conservation area this large replacement dwelling resembles a series of building interlinked with glass. The accommodation over three floors will be a significant addition to the area.

Turney Street, Ovenden

  • Description: Long standing client G&W Developments purchased a steep and challenging site on the edge of Huddersfield which contained a single dwelling. The completed scheme comprises of 18 single aspect apartments dug into the hillside, with three floors below the ground.

Manor Road

  • Manor Road: Commissioned by local engineering firm Bush Fabrications, we were asked to obtain a planning approval on this constrained site in the up and coming Holbeck urban village. The planning permission was achieved for undercroft car parking, grade A commercial office space and contemporary living accommodation.

Wellfield Gardens

  • Description: This suburban site sits within mature woodland in a conservation area and comprised of a grade II listed building and gardens. The client, a private developer, asked us to convert the existing building into residential accommodation and add contemporary accommodation to the new build element.

Aspley Heights

  • Description: Long standing client G&W Developments purchased a steep and challenging site on the edge of Huddersfield which contained a single dwelling. The completed scheme comprises of 18 single aspect apartments dug into the hillside, with three floors below the ground.

Newmillerdam

  • Description: Sat within the conservation area of Newmillerdam, this site enjoys panoramic views of the lake. The single dwelling provided for a private client maintains a traditional appearance.

Linea

  • Description: This project comprises of 111 residential apartments, which are accessed from a large central glass roof atrium all sat above basement car parking. The fenestration of the building is designed to continue the rhythm and patter of the adjoining terraced properties.

Bury College

  • Description: Following the success of our Citispace project, we were asked by Britspace Modular Buildings to assist with this two storey sports facility for Bury College. The building was constructed off site and erected within 6 weeks.

Hailgate House, Howden

  • Description: Our clients Brassington and Coxan Ltd purchased this Grade II former gentleman's residence in the market town of Howden and asked us to convert the building into luxury apartments. We were also successful after extensive negotiations with the planning department to create further living accommodation in the grounds of the building.

Shine

  • Description: This Grade II former school in Harehills, Leeds was converted into a community focused workspace for the Camberwell Group. The office accommodation is within the former classrooms which are all around a central atrium/entrance foyer.

Beaconsfield Centre, Halifax

  • Description: A former school for disadvantaged children set in a conservation area and the green belt, in a woodland setting. We were able to obtain permission to extend and refurbish the building to provide contemporary living accommodation.

Indigo Blu

  • Description: Commissioned by Maple Leaf Securities on this key gateway site into Leeds city centre. The building houses a basement car park, two floors of grade A office accommodation and seven floors of apartments.

Power League

  • Description: Part of an ongoing relationship with the national five a side football centre provider Powerleague, we have completed numerous projects throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. The projects typically comprise of state of the art football pitches with associated club house and changing facilities.

Manygates

  • Description: This project comprises of a number of parts including the conversion of large period properties and a new build element which respects and is in sympathy with the existing buildings. The site was particularly constrained and presented highway difficulties.

The Faversham

  • Description: Our client of this ever popular public house, was looking to sympathetically increase the existing accommodation to provide a purpose built performance space. The completed design provides a one and a half storey performance venue, fully acoustically treated, with a roof top garden terrace.

Climbing Wall, Harrogate

  • Description: Working alongside John Dunne (one of Britain's best climbers), following the successful completion of Manchester Climbing Wall, we were commissioned to provide an indoor climbing centre in a disused industrial building on Harrogate's Hornbeam Park.

105 Wigton Lane

  • Description: Working alongside longstanding colleague, Uffizzi Interiors, we were commissioned to provide this traditional house on the desirable Wigton Lane.

Ling Lane

  • Description: We were commissioned by a private client to create a new replacement dwelling on the popular north Leeds Ling Lane. The building has a traditional frontage which respects the local vernacular with a contemporary rear elevation allowing the living accommodation and pool house to link with the landscaped gardens.

Citispace

  • Description: One of Leeds first 'micro flat' projects, the 288 apartments were constructed using modern methods of construction. Prefabricated by Britspace Modular Buildings as complete fitted out apartments (including fixtures and fittings) prior to delivery to site.
