Bespoke New Build House, Farrer Lane, Oulton

Striking New Contemporary Dwelling Within Historic Conservation Area

Architecture 1B transformed a historically sensitive site within the former walled garden of Oulton House, in the historic core of the small village of Oulton, replacing a poor quality bungalow with a very distinctive larger modern replacement dwelling.

Contained within the 3.5m high historic brick walls, the 1461m2 plot, is nestled within the Oulton conservation area, which itself is full of listed and historically significant domestic properties.

What made the development of this site so unique was that at the time it was the only large modern domestic property of this size within the conservation area, and approved on the merits and quality of the architectural response to the site. The dwelling forms a distinctly modern interpretation of the rambling ad-hoc form exhibited by similar sized historic properties in the area that have been altered and extended over time, with 3 separate building forms connected by fully glazed elements.

Finished to a very high standard, the visually striking contemporary dwelling offers functional and spacious modern spaces, with a constant connection to the garden and surrounding wooded historical village, that provides quality of life enhancements for its inhabitants.
